A Change in Talent

Day 3 at the Miss Connecticut pageant.

Miss Greater Rockville Katlyn Lewicke reports from the Miss Connecticut pageant.

Actually, it's technically Day 4, as it's midnight.

Wow.

Well, today we got up at our usual time, had breakfast, and got ready for the day. My roommate Eliza and I spent some time curling her hair, as she had an interview in the afternoon, and we headed off to the Garde around 8:30.

Throughout the morning, we alternated running through teen and miss numbers, talents, and so forth. We ate lunch and rehearsed more before having a run-through art around 4 p.m. I practiced my talent twice in costume, which was my first time ever playing piano for an audience! I have only been playing for a few months. (I danced for years, but after breaking my foot in 2010 and trying unsuccessfully to recover and force myself back into ballet, I finally admitted defeat and decided to make a fresh start with talent.) When the end of rehearsals came, we scarfed some supper, which was a Thanksgiving dinner, and spent an hour getting ready.

The curtain went up, and we all introduced ourselves to the audience for the first time, clad in our interview attire. My group performed our talents tonight, and although mine was not a perfect performance, I am really proud of how I did. I always get stage fright for talent, although I could speak to an audience all day without any trepidation. It's just one of those things, I guess!

When the show finished, we went back to the hotel and had visitation time with many attendees, and then the board sat us down and fed us - you'll never guess - McDonald's! I don't eat fast food, EVER, but I gave in and had a small container of french fries. No cheeseburger. No thanks. (Not because it's a cheeseburger, but because it's McDonald's.) After telling us how wonderfully we had done, Tom Prete, our fearless executive director, dismissed us.

I stumbled up to my room, quite literally, took off my stilettos and sat down to write this!

Tomorrow I compete in evening gown, on-stage question, and swimsuit after another day of rehearsals.

Wish me luck!

- Katlyn"
