Obituary: Betty N. (Mayo) Chapman

Betty N. (Mayo) Chapman, 86, of Vernon entered into eternal rest Tuesday, April 17. 2012.

She was born January 15, 1926 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Alfred and Nora Grace (Neely) Mayo. In 1935 she moved to East Hartford,CT with her parents and her four siblings; Meral, Alberta, Arthur, Alfred and Floyd Mayo before settling down in Vernon in 1937. In 1946 she married her childhood sweetheart Harold Chapman. They moved to Manchester where they lived until 1956 when they moved back to Vernon. As a teenager Betty was employed at the Rockville Envelope company, later she worked at Iona Small Appliance , Aldan’s Spinning Mill, American Thread, Cavrocks Fiberglass Company and Apollo Plastic Factory. She was also an ordained Pentecostal Minister.


Betty is survived by her daughters; Nadine Hayes and her husband Herbert, and Dolores Gagnon and her husband Glenn all of Vernon; her grandchildren; Sherry Griffin and her husband James of Manchester, Amy Woodworth and her husband Gerald of Vernon, Glenn Gagnon, Jr. of Vernon, Nadine Gray of Belfast, ME, Jennifer Gagnon of East Hartford; 11 Great Grandchildren; her brother and sister-in-laws Alfred and Sony Mayo of Killeen TX, Dorothy Mayo of West Suffield, Vicoria Mayo of Willimantic and her dear friends Ida Robert, Marilyn Lafontaine and Joe Z. She was preceded into Heaven by her husband Harold, brothers Meral, Arthur, Flloyd and sister Alberta, brother and sister in law Buell and Josephine Chapman, her middle daughter Carol Ann and her husband Daniel Gray Jr., and her great grandson Skylar Woodworth.

Relatives and friends may join the family for a graveside service at 1 PM on Monday, April 23, 2012 at Grove Hill Cemetery in Vernon.
