AFSCME Local 1471 Supports HVCC Food Bank

With the Christmas holiday approaching, members of AFSCME Local 1471, representing Vernon Public Works, Water Pollution Control Authority, Animal Control and Parks & Recreation employees, donated $700 to the Hockanum Valley Community Council (HVCC) Food Bank.

Local 1471 President D.J. Lupacchino presented the union’s contribution Dec. 6 to HVCC Chief Executive Officer David Engelson as many of the bargaining unit’s 52 members looked on.

“It’s important to support our local community, especially during the holidays,” Lupacchino said. “HVCC does an amazing job helping people in need who live in Vernon and Tolland County. Many of these folks are employed or under-employed, but having a rough time making ends meet.”

Local 1471 members also donated $500 to HVCC last month for Thanksgiving, bringing the union’s total contribution to $1,200.

“The number of hungry individuals and families continues to grow across the state and in the towns we serve, so I want to thank the members of AFSCME Local 1471 for thinking of people in their community,” Engelson said. “Their generosity helped us feed 750 families at Thanksgiving and will help us in our effort to feed 1,000 families for Christmas.”
