Things to know in Vernon for Aug. 27, 2013.

It's a holiday weekend coming up and that calls for a little trash talk.

Here is the Labor Day collection schedule

The Vernon Public Works Department will be closed on Monday, Sept. 2 in observance of Labor Day.

Trash and recycling will not be collected on that day. They will instead be picked up on the following day - Tuesday, Sept. 3 - along with that day’s regular collections. Excess refuse and recycling may be brought to the Transfer Station on Hockanum Boulevard free of charge during normal business hours - Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays noon to 4 p.m.

The Transfer Station will be closed on Sunday, Sept. 1.

The first day of school for students in grades PK through 6 and Grade 9 is Wednesday. Students in grades 7 and 8 and 10 through 12 join them on Thursday.

The Town of Vernon will be offering an economic development event over breakfast on Oct. 9, at Town Tall. The purpose of this event is to give brokers, businesses, developers and site selectors an opportunity to network, promote their property or project, and delivers updates on what Vernon has to offer, Economic Development Coordinator Shaun Gately said.

Monday was a day for Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman to make a point about equality.
Wyman, a Tolland resident, joined Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to issue statements in support of Women’s Equality Day.

The day was established in 1971 by a Joint Resolution of Congress.

“A lifetime of earning less pay not only means a smaller paycheck, but also means a retirement with less security for a woman and her family,” Wyman said.  “That is a fundamental economic disadvantage that is clearly unfair and needs to be dealt with so women can better support their families today and retire on equal footing with men.”

Aug. 26 marks the day in 1920 when passage of the 19th Amendment ensured American women had the right to vote.

On Tuesday morning, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is attending a ceremony at Bradley International Airport commemorating the inaugural flight of the airport’s new daily nonstop, round-trip flight to Los Angeles.

Joining him are members of the Connecticut Airport Authority, including Chairwoman Mary Ellen Jones and Executive Director Kevin A. Dillon, and Regional Vice President of American Airlines Dale Morris.
