Day 1 Of the First Day of School and Bus Safety ...

Things to know in Vernon for Aug. 28, 2013.

Vernon schools have two opening days for students.

The first day of school is scheduled for Wednesday - today - for students in Pre-K through Grade 6 and Rockville High School freshmen

The first day of school for seventh- and eighth-graders and RHS sophomores, juniors and seniors is scheduled for Thursday.

Police said to "use caution" when traveling around Vernon while students and bus drivers adjust to their routes and bus stops.

Police said it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus with the red/amber lights flashing on a public highway, private road, parking area, and school property. That includes stopping on a four-lane road like routes 30 and 83 even if traveling in the opposite direction as the bus, police said.

Drivers are also prohibited from turning at an intersection in the direction of a school bus that is boarding or unloading passengers, police said. Drivers must stop no nearer than 10 feet from the front or 10 feet from the rear of the bus in response to the flashing red or amber lights, police said.

The fine for passing a standing school bus is $465. Any subsequent violation is a summons to court, police said.

Residents can call Vernon police at 860-872-9126 with any questions.
