Ackert, Guglielmo, Get Endorsements

Both will be on the election ticket.

Timothy Ackert has received a unanimous endorsement from the Republican Party for the 8th House District, which includes Columbia, Coventry, Tolland and Vernon. Matt O’Brien, of Coventry, endorsed Ackert and Dan Sullivan of Vernon and Gary Littlefield of Columbia seconded the nomination. In accepting the endorsement, Ackert said, "It has truly been an honor to serve the 8th District over these last two years. Letter to the Editor

Mayor Reflects on Six Months in Office

He says positions are open on boards and commissions.

To the Editor: Where does the time go?  My first six months in office have flown by and I have enjoyed every minute. It is particularly rewarding when residents call my office and I have the opportunity to personally help.   Most recently, the budget has been the primary focus of my time and effort.  Working with the town departments, Board of Education and various outside agencies has been a learning experience. I appreciate all of their efforts.    Please accept my  personal thanks to all the citizens for supporting the Town’s recommended budget for Fiscal Year 2012-2013. While no budget is ever perfect, it will meet the needs of our citizens and our community. No programs were cut  and no layoffs were required. The storm clean-up …

Schafer Appointed to Traffic Authority

She is formally back on the scene after a short break following the mayoral race.

Pauline Schaefer is back in the mix. Mayor George Apel took care of that on Tuesday by presenting her appointment to the Vernon Traffic Authority to the Town Council. The council endorsed the move. Schaefer's term began on Wednesday and is set to expire on Feb. 21, 2014. Schaefer, a Democrat, has been active in the Historical Society and Rockville Downtown Association, but was without a formal board or commission seat after losing the four-way mayoral race to Apel back in November. She had sat on the Town Council from 1999 to 2011. Schaefer was also a Board of Education member from 1983 to 1995. She also recently forced a budget referendum when she handed in a petition with her husband, Carl. Schaefer is now a regular member of the Traffic…

Council to Revisit House and Voting Districts Next Month

The items have been designated for the June 5 agenda.

Next month, the Town Council will presumably take formal action on changes to districts 8 and 56 for the state House of Representatives and changes in the local voting districts. The last time a formal discussion on the matters reached the council floor was on January 17, when the council rejected two plans. Of the 11 council members present at the meeting, only Democrat Michael Winkler voted in favor of the proposed redistricting plan. The registrars of voters have until Jan. 24 to file a new plan. New House district configurations have to be drawn up, Democratic Registrar Judith Beaudreau said in January, because of population shifts in the 56th and 8th districts. Democrat Claire Janowski represents the 56th and Republican Timothy Ackert…

Administration Playing "King Solomon" With Vernon's Budget

Purse strings are being tightened for the duration of the fiscal year, the mayor said.

Mayor George Apel has administered what he described as an administrative spending freeze on all general government accounts for the duration of the fiscal year. The fiscal year ends June 30. Apel made the announcement on Tuesday as part of his report to the Town Council. Apel said Town Administrator John Ward would be "playing King Solomon" and meeting regularly with all department heads to review budgets. Other highlights of the mayor's report are: Parks and Recreation Director Bruce Dinnie is receiving an award from the Connecticut Greenways Council on June 1. • The Senior Center could be having evening hours once a week during the summer. A schedule is being studied, Apel said. The hours would likely be 6 to 8:30, he said. • The Vernon…
