East Lyme First Selectman Paul Formica gets party nod to face incumbent Joe Courtney of Vernon in November, The Bulletin reports.
Republican East Lyme First Selectman Paul Formica won his party's support Friday to face Incumbent Democrat Joe Courtney in November for the 2nd Congressional District, The Bulletin reported. Nearly 60 percent of the 300 delegates voted for Formica, according to The Bulletin. Madison resident Daria Novak took 33 percent of the ballots, and Doug Dubitsky of Chaplin was third, The Bulletin said.
Both will be on the election ticket.
Vernon's two Republican state legislators have been endorsed unanimously for re-election in the fall. State Rep. Timothy Ackert has received a unanimous endorsement from the Republican Party for the 8th House District, which includes Columbia, Coventry, Tolland and Vernon. Matt O’Brien, of Coventry, endorsed Ackert and Dan Sullivan of Vernon and Gary Littlefield of Columbia seconded the nomination. In accepting the endorsement, Ackert said, "It has truly been an honor to serve the 8th District over these last two years. I have been very engaged in the legislative process, attending all of the committee meetings, public hearings and house sessions. Along with that, I have been holding public forums and office hours in each district. I have…

The items have been designated for the June 5 agenda.
Next month, the Town Council will presumably take formal action on changes to districts 8 and 56 for the state House of Representatives and changes in the local voting districts. The last time a formal discussion on the matters reached the council floor was on January 17, when the council rejected two plans. Of the 11 council members present at the meeting, only Democrat Michael Winkler voted in favor of the proposed redistricting plan. The registrars of voters have until Jan. 24 to file a new plan. New House district configurations have to be drawn up, Democratic Registrar Judith Beaudreau said in January, because of population shifts in the 56th and 8th districts. Democrat Claire Janowski represents the 56th and Republican Timothy Ackert…

Challengers are lining up against Courtney.
Two Republicans over the past two days have announced their intentions to seek the party's nomination for the 2nd District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. The seat is currently occupied by three-term Democratic incumbent Joseph Courtney. On Monday North Windham lawyer Doug Dubitsky announced that he is entering the race for the Republican nomination. Dubitsky is a member of the Chaplin Board of Finance. He is also a farmer, and longtime small business owner. On Sunday, East Lyme Republican First Selectman Paul Formica declared his intention to seek the GOP nomination. Formica is a small business owner and three-term first selectman. In a news release announcing his candidacy, Formica said formal announcements will take place on …

Ackert, Murphy are seeking the office seat.
The race for the 8th District seat in the state House of Representatives is taking shape. This week, State Rep. Tim Ackert, a Republican who resides in Coventry, announced that he is seeking another term. Democrat John Murphy, also a Coventry resident, had already declared his intentions to run for office. The district includes some of the southern portion of Vernon. Ackert said he will focus on the state’s economy, jobs, and taxes. Ackert said he worked to pass the bi-partisan Jobs Bill, sponsored legislation to eliminate the wholesale gas tax, and worked "to protect retirement funds from taxation." He is a former trustee for the 12 Connecticut community colleges. Let Patch save you time. Get great local stories like this delivered right…

The turnout was 16.29 percent.
Republican Town Committee Chairman Harold "Hal Cummings" turned out to be a political prophet on Tuesday. The local segment of the GOP's presidential primary turned out to be the beginning of Mitt Romney's campaign. In a turnout of 16.29 percent, 427 local voters cast ballots. Romney garnered 288, while Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich totaled 61 each. Rick Santorum had six and the uncommitted totaled 11. The most exciting part of the day came midmorning when Cummings went to vote at Vernon Center Middle School. With Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene taking out the first week of schools, an in-service day was canceled and with the student in schools, side doors normally used for voting were locked. It took Cummings a while to get in and cast his …

A Quinnipiac poll breaks down the U.S. Senate race and Republican presidential primary.
A Quinnipiac University poll shows Linda McMahon leads former U.S. Rep Christopher Shays by a 51-42 margin, but falters against Democrats compared to her opponent. In the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, U.S. Rep. Christopher Murphy, D-5, leads with 37 of the vote, followed by former Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz with 25 percent and State Rep. William Tong with 4 percent. Polling results for possible November matchups: “Congressman Christopher Shays has narrowed the gap with Linda McMahon from 15 points to 9 points. The question is whether he can catch up by primary day, August 14,” said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz. “In general election matchups, Shays runs neck and neck with either Congressman Christopher…

Jason McCoy said he will donate campaign funds to the state Republicans.
Former Vernon Mayor Jason McCoy on Tuesday said he will "formally suspend" his campaign for the U.S. Senate. McCoy had announced he was exploring his options in Washington just six months ago during the same news conference in which he announced he was not seeking a third term as Vernon's chief executive. McCoy said he will donate all excess campaign funds to the Connecticut Republican Party. He said he had raised about $5,000. “Upon confirming with party officials, we have decided that the best way to help Connecticut would be to donate all excess campaign funds to the Connecticut Republicans,” McCoy said. “I hope that the donation to the Connecticut Republican Party will help elect fiscally responsible candidates because Connecticut’s …

Vernon will stay with six polling places for the April primaries.
The town's voting districts will stay the same. For now. A proposal endorsed by the registrars of voters was slaughtered on the floor of Tuesday's Town Council meeting and the vote doomed any chance of re-drawing any lines for an April 24 presidential primary. The registrars have until Jan. 24 to file a new plan. Of the 11 members of the council, only Democrat Michael Winkler voted in favor of the proposed redistricting plan. "It's dead now," said Republican Registrar Cynthia Madden. It has to be revisited, Democratic Registrar Judith Beaudreau said, because of population shifts in the 56th and 8th state House districts. Democrat Claire Janowski represents the 56th and Republican Timothy Ackert holds the 8th district seat. The proposal was…

Club is not charging cops any rent.
The Vernon Police Department is getting its shooting range back. The Rockville Fish & Game Club has agreed to let local police build a range to the east of the current pistol range on the club's property. The Town Council approved the plan on Tuesday. The department had a range on the Tankerhoosen property off Reservoir Road, but lost it when the property was sold. Sgt. Daniel Champagne said officers would have to perform their marksmanship qualification drills in places like East Hartford and Newington. The Rockville Fish & Game Club already has facilities for both handguns and rifles, but the agreement calls for a new range constructed by the town. Members will be able to use the range when officers are not using it. The police will not …

It is even worse Tom. Tim Ackert is an electrician by trade and is a small business owner. His competitor is a big union guy with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. I get the impression the big union guy wants to squash the little guy. I like the little guy and always support underdogs.   more ›
