Adventures in Vernon Consignment and Thrift

OK, OK...I disappeared for a while. My sincere apologies. I have been a little busy falling in love:) So, I am sure you all forgive me!

For the past few weeks I have been really interested in the art of consigning, as well as the concept of thrift shopping. As a single Mom of two who was recently laid off, I know full well how important conserving money and sticking to a budget is. So, shouldn't shopping sales, shopping at thrift stores, and reselling your gently used items be a given? I ask this, and many times get a cringe of disgust. Read this, and change your mind!

Our first stop was Just Like New Consignment , located at 435 Hartford Turnpike in Vernon. This is a place where you can bring in your gently used items and receive a percentage of the selling price. I was very impressed to find that they have a lay-a-way department! I, of course, found lots of things I wanted.

Theere is a second store in Glastonbury as well.

Our second stop was at Thrifty Treasures Thrift Shop, located at 1285 Hartford Turnpike in Vernon. The owner, Merry Garrett, was so hospitable and informative. She and her husband run this shop which sells items from donations, moving sales, and auctions. And, anyone who knows me knows that I undoubtedly found things I wanted.

I learned a lot about how these types of businesses are run, but mostly loved meeting the women who make it happen, and making purchases, too!

Amy's Attic in Rockville across from the Town Hall is another good store, as is Good Cents, also in Rockville in Lafayetter Square, across the street from the Red Apple. Goodwill is in Manchester in front of Big Y. Salvation Army on Union St. in Vernon, and Broad St. in Manchester also have good selections for low prices. There's also Uptown Consignment in South Windsor, which is a consingment too. All these places have good prices and quality items. Amy's Attic gives toys away for children. If you want a real adventure, or as I refer to it, treasuring hunting, you need to check out more than a couple locations. I make the rounds every month. New stuff comes in on a daily basis. I found a $600 painting in the frame that only needed a bracket on the corner to hold the canvas in for $12.50 at one of these places. I know the cost of the painting because I have one by the same artist. I also found a $65 bracelt for $9. If you shop well, you can truly find some great treasures. Happy hunting!!

Thrifty Treasures Thrift Shop is an real gem! They are new (open almost a year) and our group visits often. Plus they are in a safe area of town. The prices are amazing. My friends and I thought about the top 5 thing we like: They have a large variety of items, they have antiques to brand new items, they price to sell (have sales all of the time on top of low starting prices), they always have tons of new stuff and they refer us to other local shops in town! The store is super clean without overcrowding. The owners are just nice and helpful. www.thriftytreasuresthriftshop.com (we like to check out the sales and pictures online) and follow them on Facebook. I sound like an ad but honestly it is a new place with a different vibe. Here's to hoping all of the businesses do well!

Sarah - Great article. I am sorry to hear that you were recently laid off. If you are interested, I have an opening in my State Farm Insurance Agency here in Vernon (in the same plaza as the Good Cents store Edie mentions in her post) as an insurance sales team member. Someone with your business background could be a great fit. If you are interested, please e-mail me at adam@insuremeadam.com, or you may call my office at 860-454-7770.

While the debate rages over the governor creating jobs, Weissberger is creating one!

Thanks Sarah for pointing these stores out.

I will be checking the thrifts on Rt 30 soon. Growing up in Vernon, 4 kids, 1 car & a stay at home mom meant we never bought new. Never went clothes shopping for the new school year. Salvation Army, Goodwill & our church rummage sales were the standard for us.

Glad to see Edie is finding hidden treasures too. They are called "Diamonds in the rough."

Sarah keep up the good articles.
PS: Congrats on "Falling in Love" again. Everyone should be that happy.
