Vernon Police Mourning the Death of a Sergeant
Sgt. Daniel Moore died on Wednesday, police said.
A veteran sergeant from the Vernon Police Department has died, Police Chief James Kenny said.
Sgt. Daniel Moore, an 18-year-veteran of the department, was found dead in People's State Forest in Barkhamsted on Wednesday, according to a department-issued news release.
He was 43.
Moore was reported missing on Tuesday and his vehicle was located in the state forest, Vernon police said. An extensive search by Vernon, State and Conservation police located his body on Wednesday, according to the news release.
Vernon police said the case is being classified as an untimely death with "no criminal aspects" as part of an investigation by State police and the Western District Major Crime Squad, which handles untimely deaths.
"The members of the Vernon Police Department extend our deepest sympathy to Sgt. Moore's family and friends," Kenny said.
Vernon police spokesman Lt. William Meier said today that funeral arrangements are pending.
Kenny and Mayor George Apel were meeting on Thursday to discuss what memorials will take place locally, Meier said. Local police are wearing mourning bands in Moore's honor, Meier said.
Moore joined the force in 1994 and served in a variety of roles, including in the narcotics and detective divisions, Meier said.
Moore had earned his share of decorations while on the job. His honors included:
• Four Letters of Commendation.
• Two Distinguished Service Unit Citations.
• A Meritorious Service Unit Citation.
• An Exceptional Service Award.

It is only fair to report the details here of what happened here. Although very trajic, if it were anyone else other then a police officer, there would be more details in the news.
