Strong Farm Placed on State Historic Registry

The designation should help with grant writing.

Strong Farm has made the state Register of Historic Places.

Farm principal Nancy Strong said the designation is critical to obtaining funding from The Connecticut Barn Grant.

The farm is located at the intersection of West Street and Peterson Roads in Vernon Center.

The Strong Farm barn was one of the first recipients of the matching grant for a feasibility and conditions study. It has received two other grants as well to help with the costs of roof and foundation work, Strong said.

Another application for a barn grant has been submitted to help replace the roof on on the big hay barn. The cost estimate for that project is more than $17,000, Strong said.

The Strong Farm Steering Committee is working with the Connecticut Urban Legal Initiative at UConn Law School to get the Strong Family Farm established as a non-profit organization. The plan is to make the farm an agricultural education center.

Upcoming activities planned are a farm work day on April 13 and an Animals on the Farm event on May 11.
