Sept. 23, 2011: National Hug A Vegetarian Day

Dress up that salad.

1. AOL Weather says to expect rain, good for what is still in the garden.

2. Today is Hug a Vegetarian Day… or was it the Wednesday (or Saturday)? Maybe Sept. 30? Searching the Internet, it's hard to determine what the exact day is this year, as the many sources we’ve uncovered are each offering their own guesses as to the official date for this fun observance. We're going with this site, however, which is a great reference for all the serious, fun and bizarre holidays and observances in the U.S.

Hug a Vegetarian Day is for hugging the people who love animals the most – vegetarians and vegans. This is the one day of the year (or one of several, if you choose to celebrate all of the alleged days!) that is dedicated to showing your friends, family and classmates that being vegetarian or vegan is positive, fun, compassionate and, most of all, hug-worthy.

3. If you're interested in vegetarianism, mark your calendars for Oct. 16. This is the Northern Connecticut Vegetarian Society's next , which is held in Windsor Locks. Nationally certified Chinese herbologist Nancy Correa will be on hand to speak about which herbs are good for the body and improve well being. Click the above Potluck Dinner link for all the details or visit the Northern Connecticut Vegetarian Society Web site. You may also contact 860-623-8082 or veggyharry@aol.com for information about joining the society.

4. Vegetarian Times provides a wonderful source of recipes, which can easily be searched by a number of different categories, including cuisine, course, appliance being used (such as crock pot) and others. The magazine and associated Web site boast the world's largest selection of vegetarian recipes, so be sure to check them out if you'd like to prepare something meat-free. If it comes out good, you may just be the recipient of a hug today!

5. Hungry? Inter Produce on Route 83 has nearly every vegetable imaginable cheap.
