Police Setting Up DUI Checkpoints Tonight

It's a joint effort with Metro Traffic Services.

Drivers thinking about having a few before getting behind the wheel tonight beware, because the and Metro Traffic Services will be conducting DUI checkpoints in Vernon on Thursday.

It's part of a set schedule organized by Metro, Vernon police spokesman Lt. William Meier said.

The checkpoints are scheduled to be be in operation from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. on Route 83, Route 74, Bolton Road and South Frontage Road, West Street, Route 31 and Route 30.

The operations are being funded through a federal "Comprehensive DUI Enforcement Program" grant that is a regional effort to combat drunken driving through the use of checkpoints and roving patrols, police said.

A similar operation has been schedueld for roads in on Friday.

Though the grant program requires publicity and a mid-week operation seemingly loses out on the peak labor Day weekend party traffic, Meier said Thursday checkpoints traditionally yield their share of stops with the happy hour crowd.
