Police: Man Charged With Huffing and Driving

The vehicle smashed into a bank sign, police said.

A Vernon man is facing g a variety of charges after a reckless driving spree on Friday along Talcottville Road while allegedly high on a recreational drug, according to an arrest report.

Talcottville Road is the local name for State Route 83.

The vehicle was unregistered and was not properly insured, Vernon police said.

Jose Santos, 35, of 401 Talcottville Road, has been charged with:

• Evading responsibility.
• Driving under the influence.
• Operating a motor vehicle without the proper insurance.
• Operating an unregistered motor vehicle.
• Reckless driving.
• A restricted substance violation. 

According to an arrest report, police were summoned to the scene of a crash at the intersection of Talcottville and Windsorville roads at about 3 p.m.

The vehicle left the scene and was heading south on Talcottville Road before police could arrive, according to an arrest report. Police said several 911 calls came in regarding another crash at 560 Talcottville Road as officers were trying to catch up to the vehicle.

Police said the vehicle had left the southbound lanes, crossed over both northbound lanes and slammed into the Sovereign Bank sign. Santos was injured, but walking outside the vehicle when officers arrived, according to an arrest report.

An investigation into the crash revealed that Santos was "huffing poppers," or inhaling amyl nitrate, prior to leaving a store on Windsor Avenue, according to an arrest report. The substance is found in nail polish and air freshener and is inhaled for a quick high, according to Wikipedia.

Santos was transported to Rockville General Hospital and arrested there, police said.

Police did not elaborate on the extent of his injuries.

Santos was released on a $1,000 box and is due in court on May 15, police said.
