Hurricane Sandy: 2,380 Vernon CL&P Customers Without Power

Line crews are working all over town.

It was smooth sailing until the winds picked up just after 6 p.m.

And did they pick up until about 7:30.

The results were several falling trees and several power outages.

When stacked up against the state's coastline communities, Vernon's problems were minor, but 2,380 - or 15 percent of Connecticut Light & Power's local customers - were in the dark as of 9 p.m.

The main road closures were out 30 at Meadowlark Road, where wires were down, and the intersection of Bolton and Bamforth roads for a similar situation, police said.

Center Road was briefly closed when a large evergreen tree fell against some wires near Robin Road and knocked out power in that neighborhood.

A Fire Department member was coming back from another call when a power line dislodged by the falling tree slammed against his vehicle. He then stopped to help secure the scene.

Vernon police said that there were 65 calls as of 9 p.m. and they were on pace for 80 calls at midnight.

No arrests had been made as of 10:30 p.m.

Town Administrator John Ward said the line workers were out in full force locally.
